We hosted a networking mixer, “Developing Quality Connections: Ready, Set, Grow!” for our members, and prospective members, on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Truxton’s restaurant. The mixer provided an opportunity for City of LA employees to establish a professional connection with co-workers and with LAABP. A mixture of administrative, non-office staff, and field personnel came together to develop relationships and discuss career advancement. Approximately 65 people attended the event and were treated to savory menu selections and complimentary beverages. LAABP President David E. Jackson says of the event, “New faces walked through the door at Truxton’s and that was GREAT to see! These gatherings provide employees a chance to talk to one another at a comfortable level where knowledge and beneficial information is shared. The Membership deserves a forum in which they can communicate with one another, bring a coworker and or friend, and share knowledge. Civil service can be a very rewarding career if employees have individuals or groups they can seek out to provide them information and tips, which enhances one’s career. As we say ‘Each One Teach One’. I’m looking forward to the next networking event.”
At the mixer, raffle tickets were given to members who brought non-member guests, to the attendee who collected the highest number of business cards, and to anyone who submitted an LAABP membership application at the event. Raffle prizes were gift cards for popular restaurants and business. Gift bags containing t-shirts, ink pens, coffee mugs, and or travel cups, all showcasing the LAABP logo, were distributed. The mixer officially ended at 8pm, but at 9:00pm people were still hanging out and “mixing it up”. Incorporated in 1972, LAABP, which has an 11 member Executive Board, is a supporter of City employees of African American heritage, and aims to motive, encourage and educate its members about career progression and life milestones. For a small monthly fee, LAABP membership is available to all City of LA & DWP employees (active or retired), as well as non-City personnel for an annual fee.
